Something about Engine Valves

Valve is as popular as bearing products in our industries. It also has a very wide range of applications. Compared to some common types of valves like ball valves, butterfly valves, and check valves, the engine valve may not be familiar to us. However, it has a close relationship with car engines.

Generally, there are two types of car engine valves, i.e. the intake engine valve and the exhaust engine valve. They are the vital parts of the internal combustion engine which is a complex piece of machinery. They're under extreme pressure and move at very high speeds.

As to the intake engine valve, it draws air into the engine whenever it opens. It is compressed by the piston in the cylinder and at the top of the stroke of the piston, besides; it is ignited by the spark from the spark plug. And after that, there are gases in the cylinder. These need to be removed before the intake valve can open and draw in fresh air to mix with fuel. The opening of the exhaust engine valve allows the gases to be completely drawn out to empty the cylinder. These two types of engine valves work well with each other.

In addition to them, there are also many other mechanical components which also play a very important role in achieving proper function of the engine valves. The camshaft is in the center of the engine and it regulates the opening and closure of the engine valve. The engine block itself is over it, and there are two holes for each cylinder in the car. These are each covered by valve lifters which sit on lobes on the camshaft.

Since the engine valve is an integral component of the car, it should require regular maintenance and check-up. And it is also necessary to replace it if it has some problems. The following are some proper procedures on how to adjust an engine valve.

First of all, you should disconnect the battery cable and remove the bolts in the valve covers using a wrench. After that, you should adjust the crankshaft pulley which is located in front of the engine. You can use a box wrench and slowly turn the pulley counterclockwise. Check if the engine valves are moving whenever you turn the pulley.

Secondly, you should check which valve you are going to replace. For example, if the passenger side valves move, you need to adjust your intake valves, while you should need to adjust the exhaust valves if the driver side valves move.

Then, you have to pull a feeler gauge between the top of the valve and the rocker head. Using a wrench, adjust the nut located atop the engine valve until the gap between the rocker head and the valve is set. Continue adjusting the crankshaft until the engine valves on each opposite sides are moving. You can do the replacement of your engine valve according to the above mentioned steps. They can really offer you some help.
